Live & Direct
I was the special guest dj for the Red Bull "Live & Direct" 2 year anniversary party in Portland, Oregon last weekend. This is a monthly event that features Rev Shines of the Lifesavas, Slim Kid Tre of Pharcyde, Starchile and DJ Nature. I had a total blast throwing down. The crowd was so live I could have probably spun a set of acapellas and turned it out. Real deal...
Huge thanks to Red Bull, Rotture, Colton, Connie, Omid, Shines and everyone that came through.

In 2004, Light In The Attic and DJ Supreme La Rock compiled the first ever set of vintage Pacific Northwest soul, funk, and R&B, Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-75 (LITA 009). Nearly a decade on, the Wheedle still grooves and with this we give you our most ambitious release to date.
Over three years in the making, Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-79 is a lavishly packaged vinyl singles box set featuring ten impossibly rare 45s (some fetching thousands on the collector’s market) from Seattle’s vintage soul scene. Limited to only 2,000 hand-numbered copies worldwide, the ten 45 RPM set is housed in a gorgeous custom made magnetic flip-top box and features meticulously re-mastered audio and original label art. For those who must hear these vintage tunes and can’t relax with a tipple at the turntable, we’ve even included a free download card for all tracks.
But wait, our love for Seattle soul could not rest there… we’ve included a massive 7″×7″ glossy 96-page book with new liner notes by Jonathan Zwickel that features new interviews with the regional musicians and key players, along with never before seen photos—from smokey Seattle clubs to Patrinell Staten singing at Jimi Hendrix’s funeral. Plus, a treasure trove of local music ephemera, a replica Seattle SuperSonics trading card, and countless archival gems.
To round out this lavish set, we’ve also added a very special CD by Seattle soul titans Robbie Hill’s Family Affair: Gotta Get Back: The Unreleased L.A. Sessions, which though originally recorded in 1975, remained lost until the recent discovery of the original multi-track masters. The tapes were carefully mixed by renowned engineer and producer Steve Fisk. To say it’s a miracle that these tapes surfaced would be a massive understatement.
The first 50 online pre-orders at www.lightintheattic.net will receive two autographed photos of Patrinell Staten and Robbie Hill, along with a set of 16 trading cards from the NBA’s 1979-80 World Champions, the Seattle SuperSonics. Yes, we’re talking Emerald City basketball giants Jack Sikma, Fred Brown, and Dennis Johnson.
A true love letter to Seattle and its Soul & Funk music scenes, Wheedle’s Groove: Seattle’s Finest In Funk & Soul 1965-79 is a treasure not to be missed.

Shuckin' & Jivin'
Once again it's music Monday and today, I present to you none other then the Johnny Lewis Quartet. This is a local jazz/funk lp from Seattle that I used to see multiple copies of every single day while out diggin' for records around town. These days this has seemed to completely vanish. Original copies hardly ever pop up since being re-issued by Ubiquity. I'm not sure how these were distributed but I know you could definitely purchase copies at his shows. 99% of the copies i've ever found have his autograph on 'em. Johnny was part of the same Lewis family that owned the Paramount theatre. I believe he recorded three albums, this being my favorite one. This was recorded live in '72 at the Trojan Horse. A venue my parents used to frequent back in the day. The lead single from the album is the title track "Shuckin' & Jivin'" and for some reason is a different mix or take than the one on the Lp. The last 60 seconds of the track is a full on bongo/conga drum break. The version here is from the 7" 45 not the album.

Papaya
This week I bring to you a local Seattle, Washington band called Papaya released in 1976 on the Wolf records label. Another one of those records i've came across numerous times over the years and always threw it to the side. I finally decided to give it a listen one day only to discover the cut "Favela" a hynoptic samba jazz groover complete with a heavy weight brazilian break. A sure fire floor filler and probably one of the best examples of Brazilian fusion out there. It seems to no longer be under the radar as i've had many friends and djs ask me for a copy over the past year.

Another Dope Selection
To add to the collection! Yep, it's the first installment of Fly Sh*t Fridays as promised. Every Friday you'll see something fly posted up right here. Today i'm starting off with my recently acquired JVC RC550-L Boombox Ghetto Blaster. A long time want on my list but i've always been a day late or a dollar short. Well, not this week! This mint condition urban icon has found a new home at my place where it belongs.
Classic for so many reasons.... Don't act surprised if you catch me actually walking around town with this thing on my shoulder bumping some old Kiss FM of Kfox cassette tapes.
