How To Use A Rotary DJ Mixer
Words from the late great legendary Larry Levan. First you should never max-out your input level pots. Never try to get more overall volume by cranking the individual input level, which will only limit your headroom for blend volume matching.
Always use the master level to achieve overall volume levels. Remember the mixer is a pre-amp and it's driving the amplifiers, so the master level pot is the most reliable source for signal to the amps since it stays constant. This will allow you more flexibility when cross mixing between turntables.
To get the best sound and to make the mixer work efficiently Larry always used the input level pots between 6 & 8, 8 to10 give’s you the gain on the channel. This gives you a constant blend volume reference for mixing without compromising your overall master volume. Also it maintains a consistent record out level. The master gain pot does not affect the record out signal. Larry’s rule of thumb was to set the master level to the overall desired listening volume. Usually between 3 & 6 for low to moderate listening levels and between 6 and 9 for hi-volume listening levels. You never want to run at 10 on the master level pot for fear of overdriving the amplifiers.
Larry was a real perfectionist when it came to sound quality. He was very careful with his monitor levels. He never played his monitors all night long, mostly using monitoring when blend mixing. Once the blend was done he would lower his monitor volume to pay attention to the house volume and sound. Spot monitoring will save your ear fatigue as the night goes on.

Ruby Dee
My name is Ruby Dee and i'm a puerto rican but ya' might think i'm black from the way i'm speakin'.... Classic rap from the movie Wild Style. This is not about that Ruby Dee though. This is about the rare unreleased track found on an old discarded studio reel tape from Seattle's own Cookin' Bag. Rare and unreleased? Yep, that's I get down.

The Son Company
Back at you with the rare and obscure. No popular music from me. Anyone can bring you that! This is something I stumbled across on a religious album by the Son Company. Not only does it kick in with a monster drum break but the guy is actually rapping! Yes, this is the kind of stuff I bring you.......

It's Like Candy...
Actually, it is candy. It's not like anything except fresh. We here at true player for real do our best to bring rare and obscure things that most may not know about or have forgotten to the forefront.
Planet of the Apes was one of my all time favorite movies as a kid. They also, did the whole merchandise thing with action figures, halloween masks, toys, etc.
Well, this is the candy that was out and came with 2 prizes in the box!

Platters Records
Platters Records in Lake City, Wa. was the absolute all time best record store in the city for 12" Disco Singles. It was their specialty and they stocked all the independent stuff as well as the major label hits. The owner Gary Del Maestro (above) supplied not only myself but all the top dj's in town with the goods. I was still in high school and in my teens when I stumbled upon his shop. As we passed by with my parents one day I asked if they'd please stop so I could check it out. I was looking for "Touch Me' by Wish Feat. Fonda Rae and no store in town had it.
He had it! I continued to spend my allowance there every week afterwards. Anytime I caught wind of a new record he either already had it or would go the extra mile to find it for me. His customer service and record store was stellar and is dearly missed. Platters closed it's doors May 26th 1997. The general public was bamboozled into buying cds and stopped buying vinyl and his small independent store couldn't compete with giants like Tower who also, ended up eventually going out of business. This is my nod and salute to Gary for being him and doing what he did. Having one of the best record stores in the city and something that is totally missing today in almost all retail outlets is outstanding customer service.

Blue Gin
Here's a record I came across this past year while out record shopping. It's not necessarily a local Seattle record but it is definitely from the pacific northwest region being it's from Portland, Oregon which is about a 3 hour drive. Released on the NW Incorporated records label. Pretty much unknown as i've never heard anyone talk about it or play it out besides me. It's a killer hammond workout that I was happy to get my hands on and add to my collection...

Happy New Year
Here we are into 2013! As I sit here and reflect on my life I realized that i'm living my dream. I would've never imagined when I was a teenager dj'n in my bedroom for hours upon hours after school that my love & passion would one day be my profession.
This past year was nothing short of great. I've achieved many of my goals, met amazing new friends and played awesome events from the "Do Over" to "Saturday Love" to reuniting with one of my best friends Soul Uno to bring you our weekly "Soul Supreme" party.
I've become personal friends over recent years with people i've never imagined. People I look up to that inspire me. Biz Markie, Skeme Richards, Break Beat Lou, Cash Money, DJ Scratch, Get 'Em Gump and the list goes on...
I have a roof over my head, food in the cupboard, a wonderful family and damn near every record i've ever wanted. I don't know how it could get much better for me?! I'm very blessed, happy and a thankful man. Sometimes I used to think being an adult is over rated but I was wrong. Once I cut all negative people out of my life it got 110% better. So my advice is to get rid of any negativity your life my have. Trust that it's there that's a given but it's nothing you can't get over knock down or handle and move on.
I just really do truly wish the best for everyone. At the end of the day there's enough pie for all of us. Stop stepping on toes to get some crumbs. Wait in line and get a slice if not the whole thing is what i'm saying. The grass isn't always greener and nothing is what it appears. Do you, be you, and believe in yourself. You're not the next anyone you're the first and only you. Happy New Year and I hope it's the best one you've had yet.
